Delicious Bespoke Cakes
Hi cakers!
I’m Katie, the Gal (And Founder) behind Cake & Kale. I’m so glad you’ve found my little cake-obsessed corner of the internet. I absolutely love baking, and I always have. When I was a kid, my mom would make homemade cookies or cakes instead of buying storebought, and my dad had a hand for designing the most artistic cakes. Me and my 3 siblings would look forward to our birthday cakes every year because they would be so creative, so beautiful, and so us. It made us feel so special and loved.
When I got a bit older, I started baking things from scratch for fun. It started as a stress-reliever: I would procrastinate finishing that English essay at 3 a.m. by making a batch of oh-my-god-how-much-chocolate-can-I-fit-in-here cookies. I slowly became the friend who always brought dessert to BBQs, made birthday cakes, and had a plate of brownies ready to devour.
Even though I worked a few different corporate jobs, I would always bake on the side–for myself, or a few orders here and there for family and friends. When I realized I got so much more fulfillment from baking than I did from my day-job, I knew it was time to make the jump. And now, 5 years later, I’m a full time entrepreneur and baker. I LOVE my job, and I love that I get to make cakes that make you and your family and friends feel special and loved, just like my parents did for me when I was younger.
I really do think that a good piece of cake or delicious dessert can make you feel better, no matter what kind of day you’ve had. Or it can help make a celebration or good day, that much sweeter. I love baking and creating your custom desserts, but even more, I love knowing that I get to be a part of sometimes, that I get to spread love and joy through food, and that you love the cakes just as much as I do.
You may be wondering about the “Kale” side of the business. And before you ask: no, there is no kale in the cakes or desserts! I actually worked in the natural health industry for over a decade and during that career, learned to love food and realize how good food could make my body feel. But I also realized how demonized the diet industry could paint food: “good” foods or “bad” foods. When the truth is, food is neutral. Food is food. Some food makes our bodies feel good, other food makes our souls feel good. I love cake, and I also love a kale salad. I eat both. And I think you should, too. You can have your cake and eat your kale, too.
I also started this business at the same time as going through school to be a nutritionist. I had dreams of being part cake baker, part nutritionist. My cake business took off so quickly, and then I also had 2 boys in the last few years, and my time for nutritionist school was non-existent. SO until I open those books again, I’m here for all your caking needs, and will maybe one-day also be here for your nutritionist needs. But remember: food is food. If you love it, eat it. If it makes you feel good, enjoy it. And eat the damn cake.
